A few bars into the march, one of the musicians motioned for conductor JoAnn Falletta to look behind her. There stood Bush, wearing "a devilish smile" and motioning with his hand that he wanted to try conducting, Falletta said in an interview afterward. She handed him the baton, and he stepped up to the conductor's platform and took over.
The orchestra periodically lets donors and various dignitaries try conducting "The Stars and Stripes Forever." Falletta and another musician rated Bush better than most. "He cued the woodwinds, he cued the percussion, he kept up the tempo," Falletta said. "We were surprised."
